February 2002 Highlights

Feature: What Would Happen If...

In light of the atrocities on and after September 11, you must have been asked the question by now. In case you haven't, let me ask it. What would you do if you suddenly couldn't access your building? Its a question that you have to have an answer to, because, as we now know, it can happen to anybody, anywhere, anytime.

Interview: Terry Phillips, WYCD-FM, Detroit, Michigan

This months RAP Interview stops in the Motor City, the nations 7th largest market, where we check in with Terry Phillips, Creative Services Director at Infinity's Country outlet in Detroit, WYCD. We get an interesting glimpse of the production department at WYCD, and Terry sheds some light on the tough task of imaging Country in these changing times. Be sure to check out Terry's kickin demo on this months RAP CD!

Test Drive: Acid Pro 3.0 from Sonic Foundry

There are days when our stock music library just doesn't cut it, and the GM is too tight to spring for new music or update the library we bought in 1996. We need an original music bed, and we need it to be cheap. One way to get almost original music at stock music prices is to do it yourself with Sonic Foundry's Acid.

Q It Up: The RAP Network Speaks - Studio Computer Problems

Q It Up: What are some of the most common problems you have with the computer(s) in your studio, and what steps have you taken to reduce or eliminate these problems?

Have a Question for the RAP Network? Drop us a line and give us your suggestion!

Library Review: 4M Production Music from Production Garden

On any given day hackers try to breach my Internet-connected computers a half dozen or more times, looking for a "server" to use to launch attacks against others or trying to plant "trojan" or "zombie" programs on my PCs to take control of them. I'm not alone. If you have a full-time Internet connection, you're probably being probed continually as well. The media has had its hands full lately reporting high-profile computer break-ins. You'd think we were in the midst of an all-out info-war.

Production 212: Studio Junkies Need Not Apply

In my last column, I talked about Digital Workstations and how they don't bestow any special ability on the production wizard wannabe. I put forward the idea that the magic is in you and said I would address how one accesses that magic in future columns. Well, the future is now. Lets begin with a question: Are you a studio junkie? Do you spend a lot of your spare time hanging out at the station or in the studio? Not good.

Radio Hed: Reason

Reason has power. I don't mean to say that reaching your audience with logic is better than touching their emotions. No, you have to do that, but making an unsubstantiated claim wont be as effective as telling the story behind the claim.

...And Make It Real Creative:

Right now there are at least 5 things on your air that are driving you crazy. In one spot, the music is too hot, in another it is WRONG! A third piece has one word that came out "funny," and a fourth was voiced by, without a doubt, the wrong talent for the script. And the fifth, oh Lord, the fifth! Let me remind you that the client wrote and voiced it and leave it at that, shall we?

RAP Forum: A Diamond Out of the Rough

I recently had the good fortune to develop a radio campaign for a very different client. This client was a jeweler. And what made this client different was that he had one specific goal. He wanted, above all, for the listener to feel good about the commercial -- not the product or service, just the commercial.
